CDR Peter Woodbury Sherman![]() ![]() From "Viet Nam Air Losses" by Chris Hobson: 10 June 1967 A-4C 145145 VA-56, USN, USS Enterprise CDR Peter Woodbury Sherman (KIA) The series of raids on the Van Dien SAM support depot continued. CDR Sherman was the CO of VA-56 and was leading an Iron Hand flight in support of a raid on the depot. As CDR Sherman and his wingman reached a point about 10 miles southwest of Hanoi they had to take evasive action to aviod numerous SAMs that had been fired at them. During the manoeuvering the wingman lost sight of his leader. No ejection was seen or SAR beeper heard but it was assumed that CDR Sherman's aircraft had been the victim of an SA-2 missle and that he had been kiled. The remains of CDR Sherman were eventually handed over by the Vietnamese on 19 January 1991. Pete Sherman had only taken over command of the squadron on 17 March 1967. |
